Brandon Steward comes from the the same world as Julien Delacroix. He was born and raised in the city of Keye, under which lies a great and mysterious artifact planted in the Earth there millions of years ago, which has become the center of a conflict between groups of interdimensional beings out to unearth and possess it.

Brandon and his younger brother were raised by their father, the cold and stern chief of police for the city, after the death of their mother. Brandon was a happy, gregarious child and a popular, well-liked teenager, better at sports than schoolwork, excited to follow in his father’s footsteps as a policeman.

He couldn’t have known about the artifact buried under Keye. He couldn’t have known that the police force had been subverted to fight against the Earth’s champions – lied to about the gangs of altered humans driving people out of parts of the city, about the intentions of the champions trying to save them. He didn’t associate the police force’s logo, the lightning-like, spreading branches of an upside-down white tree, with the interdimensional being that had the force under its control. He only did as he was ordered: Find the altered humans, the dangerous gangs, the champions, and subdue them.

Then, for reasons he would never understand, the Earth chose him as one of its champions. He didn’t realize that was what had happened – only that, as the conflict escalated and his fear of failing to protect Keye became more and more acute, as his confidence in his own strength faltered, he found himself suddenly with greater physical strength than he’d ever had before. One day to the next, he went from “fairly fit” to “capable of lifting a car.” He was horrified, convinced he’d begun a transformation into one of the altered humans from whom he was meant to be protecting the city, and for months he kept the secret close.

But other champions, noticing that one of the police force was different, connected with him in secret – most notably a doctor running a shady clinic and his employee, Julien – and tentatively, he began to understand what had been done to him. To understand that his father and the police were not on the side they believed they were. Over the next months, Brandon reached into the void for power again as the conflict escalated and he began to bring the other champions in under his protection, gaining sharp night vision (and daytime nearsightedness), acute hearing, and the ability to heal injuries at startling speed while he slept. He worked undercover, hiding his condition from the police force, acting as a quiet helping hand as the police’s grip on the city tightened and other champions began to flee.

Brandon found his moment of truth when the wyrm under the city, guarding the artifact, finally awakened. There was no more hiding who he was or who he was working for: He abandoned the police force (taking with him as weapon a sword brought into the world by the interdimensional being that controlled the police centuries ago) and went all in to subdue it, revealing to his former allies what he could do. When the dust had settled, he was a traitor to his family, and his friend Julien was a giant bird who had become world-famous. …Shit happens.

Personality-wise, Brandon comes off a stern and straightforward man, prone to taking things a little too personally, with a tendency to plan for the worst. In a more comfortable setting, he has broad smile and a deep laugh. He struggles still with his power – his senses and his body have been changed, and he worries about going too far and losing the human body he knows.
